School Readiness
Envision's School Readiness FocusEnvision Goal #2: Increase by 10% low-income kindergarteners who pass developmental benchmarks by 2027; increase the number of Black kindergarteners who pass by 20%.
Recognizing the crucial role of education in building economic independence to break the cycle of poverty, Goal 2 of ENVISION focuses on strengthening school readiness among economically-disadvantaged children to prepare for a life of academic success. Working through the Early Education Coalition, UWGC aims to affect systems-level change through increasing by 10% the number of low-income kindergarteners who pass developmental benchmarks defined by literacy, math, and socio-emotional measures by 2027, as well as increase the number of Black kindergarteners who pass by 20%.

A Lifetime of Success Begins with Early Education & School Readiness
UWGC has long been a leader in School Readiness, striving for equity of opportunity among all children in Charlottesville and throughout Virginia. As the founding member of Charlottesville’s Early Coalition (EEC), UWGC has worked alongside its partners to close the opportunity gap by promoting strategies to provide all children with effective early services, supports, and high-quality early childcare and education. Working in cooperation with the Early Education Coalition, UWGC is focused on long-term systems-level change through the following:
Expand Existing Early Education Services
Increase the number of children receiving high-quality early care and education to provide access to all children with identified risk factors.
Elevate Quality
By increasing the number of early education public and private service providers participating in the Preschool Development Grant Program (PDG), the Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) child assessments, and the new Virginia unified quality measurement and improvement system (VQB5).
Identify, Develop, and Leverage Resources
Meet the ongoing annual costs of providing high-quality early education to all children by blending public and private funding.
